(wireless application protocol)Conçu par les sociétés Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola et Unwired Planet (devenu ensuite Phone.com) et commercialisé début 2000, le WAP (wireless application protocol) est un protocole de communication permettant d’utiliser l’internet à partir d’un téléphone portable ou d’un PDA (personal digital assistant), pour accès à différents services: courriel, services bancaires, météo, web, IRC (internet relay chat), etc. Un appareil utilisant le WAP est muni d’un micro-logiciel de navigation (navigateur) utilisant des pages écrites en langage WMP (wireless markup language), le langage HTML (hypertext markup language) ne convenant pas pour des pages aussi petites. Un protocole différent du WAP est l’i-Mode, conçu par l’opérateur mobile japonais NTT DoCoMo.
